Training Approach to Gold-Plated Gundogs

Whether hunting Sea Ducks on the shores of Maine or in the potholes of Nebraska, Brian wants to give you and your Retriever the fullest advantage possible. With a solid training program, you will have good hunting experiences and a full game bag!

Three Training Levels

Gold-Plated Gundogs follows a program consisting of three different levels of learning. We use three levels in determining where the Retriever stands in the training world today and where he needs to go next.

Grade School

The first level is Grade School. Grade School training teaches proper ground manners that make your dog a good citizen and lays the foundation for retrieving fundamentals needed in the next two levels. Placing the pup in a daily program guarantees these principles will be ingrained, making learning fun without any stress in later levels. Grade School training includes:

• No barking
• No noise
• Understanding the basics–sit, stay and come
• Introducing retrieving fundamentals the pup will see and be involved in later in its life

High School

The second level of training at Gold-Plated Gundogs is High School. This level builds on the solid foundation established in Grade School by incorporating everything they might encounter in the field such as boats, blinds, decoys, duck calls, shots overhead, quartering and flushing upland. High School training includes:

• Developing advanced retrieve in the field and marsh
• Establishing the vital owner-dog relationship
• Training the dog for their specific hunting discipline
• Teaching the dog to be steady
• Getting them ready for a fall hunting season

College

The third level of training is College. College puts the final touches on your dog, making them into Gold-Plated Status. A well-trained Retriever is the best conservation tool we have. College level training will have your dog ready to quarter fields in South Dakota for Ring Neck Pheasants or, hunting flooded timber Mallards in Arkansas. This level of trained bird dog can hunt anywhere in the world. Once you have hunted with this dog, you will want one for yourself. College training includes:

• Running blind retrieves
• Understanding whistle commands with hand signals taking them directly to the bird dropped by your shot
• Quartering (steady to flush and shot)
• A steady retriever capable of doing advanced multiple retrieves
• Running out of boats, blinds and flooded timber stands.

He makes sure that everything your dog could see on an actual hunt day is incorporated into training. This includes multiple marks, “no birds”, honoring principles, decoy and boat conditioning. Not every hunt goes as expected so Brian makes it a point to train his Retrievers to work through all possible situations.
